"Armageddon It" by Def Leppard was released as the sixth single from their album, Hysteria. It reached number 3, becoming their fourth top 10 hit in the United States. It made the top 20 in the United Kingdom. The record features several hits, including "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Love Bites," and "Hysteria," which helped to establish Def Leppard as one of the leading bands of the late 1980s.

Like the other tracks on the LP, the producer Mutt Lange contributed to the song enough to get co-writing credit. Lange - known for his work with AC/DC and Shania Twain, among others - replaced Jim Steinman. Steinman wrote the songs on Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell LP. Todd Rundgren produced it. Initially, the Meat Loaf songwriter was hired to create Hysteria. The initial recording sessions were scrapped.

On December 31, 1984, drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm when his Corvette flipped off a country road. Following the accident, the band stood by Allen's decision to return to the drum kit despite his disability, using a combination electronic/acoustic kit with a set of electronic pedals that triggered the sounds that he would have played with his left arm.
