By March 1997, "Wannabe" was the best-selling song in 37 nations and became the best-selling single by a girl group in the world by the end of 1997. A 2014 study chose it as the most easily recognizable pop song of the last 60 years.

Out of Time earned REM seven nominations at the 1992 Grammy Awards .
